Family Therapy

Building resilient families

Does it feel like your family is simply tolerating each other?

Have your family relationships deteriorated over the pandemic? Or are there problems that were long-standing but never fully addressed? Perhaps people in your household are barely speaking to each other, feeling more like roommates than a family? Family therapy may be helpful to address these challenges. The relationships with our family members are unlike any other, and the quality of family relationships drastically affect our sense of self and emotional well-being. Our therapists offer family-based sessions that can help heal conflict, improve communication styles and help with major life transitions (such as a move, death in the family, or teenager leaving for school).

The focus of family therapy is to improve the functioning of the family unit. Family counselling allows space for each individual to express what they need and subsequently feel heard and validated by their loved ones. It is about balancing of perspectives, walking in each other’s shoes, and understanding each other’s behaviours and reactions. Family counselling sessions can involve all family members or just a few.

What can we expect in Family Therapy?

Family therapy sessions are usually done as a family unit, but your therapist may request individual appointments first to help understand differing perspectives of the collective problems and goals. Once your therapist gathers information from each of you, they will bring everyone together to discuss common ground. Depending on the nature of the problem, your therapist may encourage role playing, games or activities, emotion exploration and attachment-based strategies to help the family work through the presenting issues. To the therapist, the family is the client, and the therapist will therefore remain impartial and neutral while navigating the conflict that brought you all to therapy.
